Ryan was shot in early August, 2009 during his deployment to Afghanistan. He has had abdominal surgery and will be brought back to the US when he is stable enough to be transported. His Mom says he'd love to get some well wishes.
Update 10/20/09 Ryan was able to go home for a recuperative stay and will then continue to recover at his permanent duty station. His family says he is doing well and healing well, and determined to get fitness primed yet. That is such great news, we are grateful he is making good progress. Please send Ryan your best wishes!!
Update 11/08/2009 Ryan's parents wish to thank everyone so much for their continued support. After leaving the hospital September 1, Ryan spent a month at home with his parents. As of October 1, he was deemed well enough to transfer to his home base. He is still expected to make a full recovery, though last week his doctor told him to lay off the heavy workouts! His Mom says "Yes he started to train, not giving his liver a chance to rest. He has been told he is among the 1% of men who survive this. He must be destined to do great things!! John and I are slowly returning to the life without drama. Thanks for your kind words. If a family has to go through this, the Marines are the best." We totally agree!!
Update May 1, 2010 from Mom:
Ryan hoped to be back with his unit and training by now, but this hasn't quite worked out as he is still not able to train at the level needed. He is still healing and considering the severity of his injury, he has to be reminded to have patience while his body heals.
Mom says "I think I can speak for him well enough to say he'd wish the mailing efforts be concentrated on marines with more acute injuries.
Thank you for all you have done. You and many other marine parents were lifelines for us and we will always remember your kind efforts on behalf of our son and us. Sincerely yours, Diane"
Ryan, we will have our card writers stop writing to you but everyone will keep your family in our prayers as your healing continues.
